The wind was howling, the boat was taking a beating, and someone was walking toward them on the waves.
Jesus had just fed thousands of people. Afterward He sent His disciples ahead in a boat, and He went up on a mountain alone to pray (Matthew 14:22–23). By nightfall the boat was far from land, “buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it” (Matthew 14:24).
Back then: The Sea of Galilee sits low between steep hills, and sudden, violent storms can sweep down on it. Several of the disciples were fishermen. They knew exactly how dangerous this was.
Shortly before dawn, Jesus came to them — walking on the lake. The disciples screamed, sure it was a ghost (Matthew 14:25–26).
“Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” (Matthew 14:27).
The storm didn’t stop first. He spoke into it.
“Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.” “Come,” he said (Matthew 14:28–29).
Jesus answered with one word: “Come.”
Peter climbed out of the boat and walked on the water toward Jesus. “But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, ‘Lord, save me!’” (Matthew 14:30).
“Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him.” (Matthew 14:31).
He didn’t wait. He caught him right away.
Jesus asked him, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?” — and He asked it while He was holding him up. When they climbed into the boat, the wind died down, and the disciples worshiped Him: “Truly you are the Son of God” (Matthew 14:32–33).
Maybe you’re sinking right now — in worry, in debt, in a marriage, in grief. “Lord, save me” is a whole prayer. His hand is closer than you think. When fear won’t let go.
Call out to Him. Meet Him, or let us pray for you first.
If Jesus met you in a broken place, we’d love to share your story — you choose the name it carries.
