An honest answer to the hardest question
When tragedy hits, this question isn’t a classroom debate. It’s personal. The Bible doesn’t hand us a neat formula — but it gives real answers, and more than that, a God who doesn’t stand far off.
The world is broken. When sin entered the world, death and suffering came with it (Romans 5:12). Much pain comes from people’s choices. Some comes from a world that is waiting to be made new.
“We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time” (Romans 8:22).
Groaning — but like childbirth, something new is coming.
Suffering is not always punishment. When Jesus’ disciples asked whose sin made a man blind, Jesus said it wasn’t his sin or his parents’ (John 9:2–3). Job lost almost everything, and it was not because he had done wrong. Be careful with anyone who says your pain proves God is angry with you.
God stepped into our suffering. Jesus wept at a friend’s grave. He was betrayed, beaten and crucified. He doesn’t explain pain from a distance — He went through it, and He rose again.
“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:28).
Not that every thing is good — but that God can work good even through it.
“He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain” (Revelation 21:4).
The story doesn’t end here.
It’s okay not to have every answer. Honest lament is in the Bible (Psalm 13). If you’re hurting right now, start here: Grief · Doubt · What’s waiting.
If your world just fell apart: we will pray for you by name.
